From the vibrant heart of Argentina, YV, representative of Alto Bondi Soundsystem, emerges as a multifaceted figure in Sound System culture. His journey, anchored in the physical resonance of 'scoops' and the synergy between the art of construction and sound, has led him to master various roles: from music production and lyrical artistry as an MC, to the meticulous work of a boxman and the selection of rhythms that ignite the dancefloor. YV embodies the philosophy that true Sound System is an integral experience, where handcrafted equipment and human connection are as fundamental as the music itself.
/How did you find your way into Sound System culture, and what hooked you to stay?
A: I got into Sound System through artists who showcased this way of reproducing music. What hooked me initially was the feeling of the 'scoops' (large-format subwoofers) and, on the other hand, the union between the craft of construction and sound.
/How would you describe the scene in your city or country? What makes it different?
A: The scene is clearly still developing, as there are still few Sound Systems built here in Argentina. What makes it different is that, with few artisanal sound systems, we have the opportunity to hear them all.
/What would you like the next generation to understand about Sound System?
A: What I would like them to understand is that an MC/DJ + Selector/Operator cannot present themselves as a SOUNDSYSTEM if there isn't a handcrafted sound system on stage. I would like them to understand the effort involved in building and maintaining a sound system of these magnitudes.
/How does one of your productions start? Do you think bass, rhythm, or melody first?
A: From the composition side, I like to first focus on the lyrics or the main idea of the theme, and then musically develop that idea.
/What role does the MC play in a session?
A: In our sessions, the MC plays a fundamental role, although it is always the selectors and operators who control when an MC comes on or off. When the MC does not possess the qualities that the Sound System requires, the selectors and operators are attentive to cut or change the MC, as well as the rhythms.
/What makes a good selector?
A: For me, what makes a good selector is not simply the tracks they choose, but the connection they have with the audience. In these genres, to my taste, I prefer selectors who use the mic and are attentive to the energy of the public.
/How did you start loading and rigging sound systems, and what's the first thing you learn about moving heavy boxes?
A: I started with the experience of owning my own Sound System. I think the first thing you learn as a boxman is that the boxes are heavier than they seem, and the importance of using every square meter within the logistics responsible for transporting the sound.
